Abstract

Digitised version of IE TCD MS 7867/38, a letter written by Margaret C. Osgood, Glendalough House, Annamoe, Co. Wicklow, Ireland to her daughter Gretchen Osgood Warren, [1929?]: "The word which came today: "I am feeling a little better", makes me so happy, I can't even express it. You must sing your spirit song, the gift of spiritual forces, whenever the bad time, the discouraging time comes. Your song must be holy. It can work wonders darling. Do tell Marjorie at once darling, for my sake. She will surely hear it from Rachel or her father. You ought to confide utterly in Marjorie, no "surprises" will take the place of that. Please invite her. Shall I go up for her? I should love to. Darling I had a wonderful evening with Bob last night. He went fishing. I sat alone by the river near a big bonfire until 11 o'clock. The bats flew over my head. I could hear the silence, broken only by the rustling of the bracken. I am thinking of the incantation Through splendour of fire Through the speed of lightning through the swiftness of the wind Through the depth of the sea. The fire held me in enchantment last night. O Gretele - I want you to keep a child spirit. You must dwell in the land of the ever young (Tir nan Og)." Margaret Cushing Pearmain Osgood (1847-1941), was an American writer and poet.
