Margaret C. Osgood to Mary Alden Childers and Erskine Childers, [June 1905?]. IE TCD MS 7867/10
Abstract
Digitised version of IE TCD MS 7867/10, a letter written by Margaret C. Osgood, Grand Hotel Metropole, Bad Nauheim, Germany to her daughter Mary Alden Childers and her son-in-law Erskine Childers, [June 1905?] referencing both Mary's, and Mary's father's (Dr. Hamilton Osgood's), health: "The letter from Molly giving us an account of the interview with Dr. Champney made us very happy & Daddy had the "I told you so" expression on his face... Send me very bit of news darlings but don't get too tired writing. You must be careful, Molly, and not get, once, tired. I worry about this because your letters sound as if you were doing a great deal too much & having too many visitors. Papa i not gaining much here, as far as I can see. He sees now... that he has "stenosis" as the doctors here say. Last night when I went in to him after dinner I found him with his big medical book on his knees, and he wished to read me something in German about his case... I thought he seemed a little down... Whenever you write direct the letter to him. He loves to get letters. The people here in the hotel are mostly Americans & do not attract me, I'm ashamed to admit...So many ill souls here, Molly, how I long to help them! I am beginning to understand the Roman Catholic mystery of Mariolatry and the Virgin, the mother heart of the universe. There is need of another element in this sad world... The doctors here are very reserved and non-commital & I cannot make them say anything about Papa... I love you two pets, you are just in the centreof your mother's hearts." Margaret Cushing Pearmain Osgood (1847-1941), was an American writer and poet, mother to writer and nationalist Mary ('Molly') Alden Childers who was married to Erskine Childers, and the maternal grandmother of Erskine Hamilton Childers (1905-1974) who became the fourth President of Ireland 1973-1974.
