Abstract

IE TCD MS 9377/1059: Letter from Michael Davitt, Ballybrack, Co. Dublin, Ireland to John O'Leary, on a Friday in [1889] referencing O'Leary's speech at Mullinahone: "I only got back from London late last night and could not therefore reply to yours of Tuesday before now. Any evening from this out - including this - until Sept. 6th will find me at home but to ensure my not being absent drop me a line to say when you can make it convenient to come. Bourke is never home on Saturdays before 10 pm. I liked your speech at Mullinahone very much. It was dignified and strong. I am not surprised at any change in Parnell's hearty heavenly inspired pronouncements, but the way in which the most contradictory utterances are received and lauded by our "national" press is simply sickening. It is amusing to see N. Ireland (United Westminster) patting you on the back this week for some expressions of yours last Sunday. If you would only go on deserving such praise, you will be offered a constituency bye and bye. I had a letter from Sir C.J.D. regretting he did not see me in London. He is full of the idea that the Tories will grant self-government if the requisite amount of pressure is applied..."
