Astrological and Meteorological Treatise on the Taqwim (calendar) of the New Year. IE TCD MS 1519
Abstract
Digitised version of IE TCD MS 1519, Astrological and Meteorological Treatise on the Taqwīm (calendar) of the New Year (old title: Astrological and meteorological treatises), 1628 (1037AH). Arabic text in naskh script, with illuminated heading (fol. 1v). Folios are lined in red with a red frame around the script on each folio. Contains labelled diagrams (fol. 12r, 13v, 14r, 14v, 15r) and tables (fols. 15v-21v). First part of the astrological manuscript discusses the fortune of places with focus on Ottoman Egypt. It also discusses other places inside and outside the Islamic world and the Ottoman empire. Includes fortunes of various groups listed hierarchically starting with the ruling Ottoman Sultan Murat Khan (IV) (1612-1640) at the top. The second part (fols. 12r-15r) discusses the influence of meteorological conditions and zodiac signs on everyday life and accompanies this with a zodiac diagram. It includes comparative calendar systems from other cultures. The third and last part (fols. 15v-21v) comprises tables of seasons, remarkable events, festivals, flora and fauna, weather conditions, propitious and unpropitious activities, and prognostications in the margins. Chester Beatty owns a Taqwīm manuscript (T 434) written in Arabic and Turkish. The manuscript at Chester Beatty is more colourful with many illustrations. The illuminated heading in both is similar.
