Abstract

Digitised version of IE TCD MS 7867/44, a letter written by Margaret C. Osgood, 165 Woodstock Road, Oxford, England to her daughter Mary Alden Childers, and son-in-law Erskine Childers (undated, but possibly between 1907 and 1910?): "Darling Molly & Erskine I have had a very quiet night & slept a good deal. I thought a great deal, too, of you two darlings.. I liked to sleep in your bed, my pets. Your flat seems like heaven to me. It is brim full of joy. You (both of you) & your baby radiate joy. Daddy took charge of me last night. It was strange. I could almost hear his voice, telling me to go to sleep quietly & to relax. Darlings, I appreciate all your loving tender thought of me. I don't deserve such children. I am sorry I was naughty in the station. I have a sort of ownership in little Erskine & I must watch myself... Caroline & Mrs Reid have been good to us..." Margaret Cushing Pearmain Osgood (1847-1941), was an American writer and poet, mother to writer and nationalist Mary ('Molly') Alden Childers who was married to Erskine Childers, and the maternal grandmother of Erskine Hamilton Childers (1905-1974) who became the fourth President of Ireland 1973-1974.
