Abstract

Digitised version of IE TCD MS 7867/47, a letter written by Margaret C. Osgood, 8 Mount Vernon Place, Boston, Massachusetts, United States to her son-in-law Erskine Childers, 5th March (no year identified): "Dearest This poem is our Molly, when she goes, she will still be a power in Heaven, "Most individual & bewildering ghost". I am sending you some cigarettes. I hope they will arrive. People here are wild over Molly's poem. It is reprinted in the Living Age, & I am sending copies to everyone (Grete too). I read it aloud at a lunch of 22 women at the Somerset. They thought it wonderful, & I often read it when I go out to dinner. I have sent a letter of Molly's to the Atlantic to publish, I hope they will use it. O Erskine I adore you & Molly with all my soul. Do you need or want anything I can give you." Margaret Cushing Pearmain Osgood (1847-1941), was an American writer and poet, mother to writer and nationalist Mary ('Molly') Alden Childers who was married to Erskine Childers, and the maternal grandmother of Erskine Hamilton Childers (1905-1974) who became the fourth President of Ireland 1973-1974.
