Abstract

Digitised version of IE TCD MS 7867/77, a letter written by Margaret C. Osgood, Tahanto Farm, Harvard, Massachusetts, United States to her daughter Mary Alden Childers, 21st December (year not identified, but between approximately 1912-1918): "Darling I enclose a cheque for £40 £35 I owe you for the coming sent and £5 I give to Hoggy January 1st as a present. Please give it to hger, with my love, for her care of the two blessed children. She is very faithful . About the parcels , when I wrote to you I had not yet rec'd your letters telling me they had arrived. Now all your letters have come, darling, I miss you & Erskine terribly. I am a lonely old creature, soon to be "gathered to my fathers". Mrs Parkman Blake had a cancer removed yesterday. We telephoned & they say she is doing well. What a world it is... Darlings I long to eat that that food, that heavenly manna...The details of every day grow more wearisome... " With an added postscript at the top of page 1: "I am sending a trunk today, Dec 21st by Express. There are presents for you all in the top & a belated stocking for Xmas. There is mince meat &c and a lot of my things. The presents are in the top, mixed up with my things. They are marked. I enclose key." Margaret Cushing Pearmain Osgood (1847-1941), was an American writer and poet, mother to writer and nationalist Mary ('Molly') Alden Childers who was married to Erskine Childers, and the maternal grandmother of Erskine Hamilton Childers (1905-1974) who became the fourth President of Ireland 1973-1974.
