Abstract

Digitised version of IE TCD MS 7867/92, a letter written by Margaret C. Osgood from onboard the Cunard Line's R.M.S. Saxonia to her daughter Mary Alden Childers, and her son-in-law Erskine Childers, month/year not identified, but between approximately 1912-1918?: "Darling children and precious Erskine & Bobby. You are going farther & farther away, and space, what we call space, is coming between us fast, very beautiful & serene, and I have talked on deck to the amazing evening star. I must not lose a moment more of my life in trifling things. I feel as if I should utter things, that have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. I know we have been made "a little lower than the angels". What an astounding thing!... I am mad with joy. You have been so good to me, so loving, so tender. I am afraid of the worlds and the distant suns. It is too big..." Contains also an excerpt from The Defence of Idols by Maximus of Tyre. Margaret Cushing Pearmain Osgood (1847-1941), was an American writer and poet, mother to writer and nationalist Mary ('Molly') Alden Childers who was married to Erskine Childers, and the maternal grandmother of Erskine Hamilton Childers (1905-1974) who became the fourth President of Ireland 1973-1974.
