Abstract
Digitised version of IE TCD MS 7867/65, a letter written by Margaret C. Osgood, Tahanto Farm, Harvard, Massachusetts, United States to her daughter Mary Alden Childers Saturday 16th March (year not identified, but between approximately 1912-1918): "O Molly! Your love letter which just came warmed my heart. "Miss you", o my sweetheart every instant. You are such a love of mine my precious. I can see you with your eyes closed sitting in the red chair near the fire, so patient, so beautifully calm in your spirit. I am so [?] but gaining a little in poise. I think Sarah is going with me to Battle Creek for a week, then I shall be alone there, if one is ever alone, with the "gods sitting on their thrones" close close to human creatures. I go up every night at five & sit in the big chair in the living room, your big chair, where Erskine & you had your love by [?], & I feel as if you were enclosing & enclosing me in it all. O Molly, I miss you both. O if London only agreed with me! It may be "mortal mind", but I feel better in this invigorating climate Molly darling. We will not look a day ahead, God will take care of us. Why am I not calmer & more trustful? And you, you wonderful creature, I see it all, and if Maggie could only change & be Molly O how I love you!" Margaret Cushing Pearmain Osgood (1847-1941), was an American writer and poet, mother to writer and nationalist Mary ('Molly') Alden Childers who was married to Erskine Childers, and the maternal grandmother of Erskine Hamilton Childers (1905-1974) who became the fourth President of Ireland 1973-1974.
