Abstract

IE TCD MS 11637/2, three songs for mezzo-soprano, violin and cello, music by Ina Boyle, set to words by Ben Jonson: scores, violin, and cello parts for 'A vision of beauty' 'Witch's charm', and 'Slow, slow, fresh fount'; separated into 10 sections: /1: Text of the three poems, and a note: "Tape recording made in Cambridge, March 1964. Mezzo soprano: Margaret Cable. Violin: Anne Macnaghten. Cello: Arnold Ashby." ['A vision of beauty': It was a beauty that I saw': "It was a beauty that I saw So pure, so perfect, as the frame Of all the universe was lame, To that one figure, could I draw, Or give least line of it a law! A skein of silk without a knot, A fair march made without a halt! A curious form without a fault, A printed book without a blot, All beauty and without a spot!" 'Witch's charm': "The owl is abroad, the bat and the toad, And so is the cat-a-mountain; The ant, and the mole, sit both in a hole, And the frog peeps out o' the fountain. The dogs, they do bay, and the timbrels play, The spindle is now a-turning; The moon it is red, and the stars are fled, But all the sky is a-burning: The ditch is made, and our nails the spade: With pictures full, of wax and of wool: Their livers I stick with needles quick; There lacks but the blood to make up the flood. Quickly Dame, then bring your part in! Spur, spur, upon little Martin! Merrily, merrily, make him sail, A worm in his mouth and a thorn in's tail, Fire above, and fire below, With a whip i' your hand to make him go!" 'Slow, slow, fresh fount': "Slow, slow, fresh fount, keep time with my salt tears; Yet slower, yet, O faintly, gentle springs; List to the heavy part the music bears,Woe weeps out her division, when she sings. Droop herbs and flowers; Fall grief in showers; Our beauties are not ours. O, I could still, (Like melting snow upon some craggy hill), Drop, drop, drop, drop, Since nature's pride is, now, a withered daffodil."] /2: 'A vision of beauty' score; /3: 'A vision of beauty' violin part; /4: 'A vision of beauty' cello part; /5: 'Witch's charm' score; /6: 'Witch's charm' violin part; /7: 'Witch's charm' cello part; /8: 'Slow, slow, fresh fount' score; /9: 'Slow, slow, fresh fount' violin part; /10: 'Slow, slow, fresh fount' violoncello part.
