Abstract

Digitised version of IE TCD MS 7867/43, a letter written by Margaret C. Osgood, 165 Woodstock Road, Oxford, England to her daughter Mary Alden Childers, (undated, but possibly between 1906 and 1910?): "Molly darling, I feel anxious about you. I wish you could get away from London. Couldn't you & Erskine come to Ireland next week & bring the baby? Is there no one you could get to take Erskine's place? I would love to pay someone for it if it could be arranged. You have both been strained & I wonder whether I have spared you enough. You are both generous of yourselves; O darling children! I can't tell you what you have been to me, these last months. I simply can't. You must know Erskine is my own boy & I lean heavily on him & wish to keep nothing from him. O what a world of mystery it is..." Margaret Cushing Pearmain Osgood (1847-1941), was an American writer and poet, mother to writer and nationalist Mary ('Molly') Alden Childers who was married to Erskine Childers, and the maternal grandmother of Erskine Hamilton Childers (1905-1974) who became the fourth President of Ireland 1973-1974.
