Abstract

Digitised version of IE TCD MS 7867/96, a letter written by Margaret C. Osgood, [Ireland?] to her daughter Mary Alden Childers on a Monday (month/year not identified, but between approximately 1912-1918?): "Darlings, Erskine's letter is just here from [Frederekshaoen? =Frederikshavn, Denmark?]. Yesterday Mr & Mrs Seagrove were here at lunch. After lunch the baby came to the smoking room with us all. He danced to the gramophone music with Hamilton & Marjorie [&?] fell over in his enthusiasm, picked himself up & with a coy look [came?] over to me & patted Smiles. His curls looked more golden than I have ever seen them, his cheeks were rosy, his little face beaming. Mrs Seagrove thought him perfectly lovely. He is a most beautiful child and he has a lovely nature... We all went to lake [Nehanigan? =Nahanagan, Co. Wicklow?] one day lately. Yesterday we walked up the dry hill and saw the sunset from the other side. In the evening we went out & lay on the ground in the moonlight. Tonight we have a bonfire, & are not going to bed before the small hours. I have been out all the morning in the fields with Daa, with the pony cart picking up iron & eating hazel nuts. Robin has been visiting the Booths for three days. Ronald Booth has been visiting here. Mr & Mrs Waller come next week & Violet [?]. We are all well. Daa is perfectly lovely to me so tender & thoughtful. I sleep in her room. Do you feel Daddy with you now? Give my love to Mrs Day..." Margaret Cushing Pearmain Osgood (1847-1941), was an American writer and poet, mother to writer and nationalist Mary ('Molly') Alden Childers who was married to Erskine Childers, and the maternal grandmother of Erskine Hamilton Childers (1905-1974) who became the fourth President of Ireland 1973-1974.
