Abstract
Digitised version of IE TCD MS 7867/51, a letter written by Margaret C. Osgood from 8 Mount Vernon Place, Boston, Massachusetts, United States to "Bobbie" (her grandson Robert Alden Childers), dated Alll Saints Say (=1st November), no year given, but possibly not before 1925?: "I have seen a garden full of these lovely lotos flowers, just as beautiful as the enclosed picture. See the seed vessel (your mother has some [gilt?] ones & I think some real lotos seed vessels) I send you a Hallowe'en card, & 3 napkins to give the maids. Today is All Saints & I have been reading about St Rita. Her name is St Margareta & I am named after her. She was the Saint of the Impossible. What a miraculous thing that is! Now please write & tell me all your news. What play of Shakespeare are you reading? Do you floss your teeth conscienciously? Are you studying hard? How is your mother? How many cats have you? How is Bride & Winifred & Mrs Moran. Where are Erskine & Ruth [=Ruth Ellen Dow; married Erskine Hamilton Childers in 1925]. I expect now to get a long letter from you, telling me every bit of news. I love & adore you, your loving grandmother. Later - This is All Souls Day, my chosen birthday, for I like Kim (have you read that wonderful story?) am a lover of all the world, aristocrats, middle class people, poor people, good people, bad people, criminals. My heart is full of love today for all souls." Margaret Cushing Pearmain Osgood (1847-1941), was an American writer and poet, and the maternal grandmother of Erskine Hamilton Childers (1905-1974, father of Robert Alden Childers), who became the fourth President of Ireland 1973-1974.
