Abstract

Digitised version of IE TCD MS 7867/61, a letter written by Margaret C. Osgood, Tahanto Farm, Harvard, Massachusetts, United States to her daughter Mary Alden Childers Saturday 7th March (year not identified, but between approximately 1912-1918): "I think of you and long to sit near you, and read to you, or do some thing to help you, you woman of patience and endurance. I have been getting on better in my digestion, and sleeping well [?], just now I have a slight sore throat. You know me Molly, & know how despairing I get. I pity you & Grete. It seems so wicked, this fear, and so uncontrollable. The snow lies deep on the earth and I cannot get out, as much as I could wish. Grete is adorable to me. I think of Battle Creek for April, but feel all the loneliness at the thought of being alone there. I have never really faced life I believe. It is dangerous to be so protected & shielded, and not to realise that the world is simply groaning with people without solace, without food or love, in terrible pain. O Molly could you teach me my lesson? I am afraid [?] without understanding of it all. You are a remarkable creature. I can see you sitting with your eyes closed beofre the fire, a smile on your dear face. O Molly, you may thank God for your equanimity. Uncle Sumner & Aunt Alice want me to come to them for as long as I choose. I may be with them in Framingham for May & two weeks in June. Do you consider coming over? Alice wants you for 2 months. She told me it would be a joy. They are lonely people. Molly I love & adore you all. My love is all that could be asked." Margaret Cushing Pearmain Osgood (1847-1941), was an American writer and poet, mother to writer and nationalist Mary ('Molly') Alden Childers who was married to Erskine Childers, and the maternal grandmother of Erskine Hamilton Childers (1905-1974) who became the fourth President of Ireland 1973-1974.
