Abstract

IE TCD MS 9376/1050: Letter from Michael Davitt, Dalkey, Co. Dublin, Ireland to James Birmingham, undated but around 1901? referencing the debts of an unnamed man: "Thinking over the condition in which the old man is situated, and learning that Miss [Hopper?] has some small debts to meet, I think it best to anticipate the action of a few friends who will, I know, send us something toward providing him with some little luxuries - he evidently requires some [?] nourishment in this very cold weather, and I therefore send you £10 with friend Collins which you will place at Miss [Hoppers?] disposal at once. I will have to write to a few friends telling them how the old man is situated, and a fortnight might elapse before I would be likely to receive what is wanted. For these reasons it is best to advance these few pounds [?] so that attention may be given without delay to what he is manifestly in need of - some creature comforts..." Recovered by Mrs. Mary Davitt.
