The good scientist: A blended-learning course on research integrity
Abstract
This 5 ECTS course on research integrity and responsible scientific work is aimed at doctoral candidates in their first year of the doctoral courses at Leuphana University Lüneburg. Based on Sponholz (2019), the course covers fundamental principles of research ethics and measures for adhering to good scientific practice, including data management, publication practices, peer review, authorship, scientific misconduct, and research involving humans and AI. Through ten self-study units, participants develop competencies for ethical and transparent research, thereby strengthening the credibility of their work. The course combines an in-person onboarding of all doctoral candidates during the Graduate School Opening Days with a holistic introduction to and reflection on good scientific practice. The publication documents the teaching materials of the seminar "The good scientist: A blended-learning course on research integrity," which was developed as part of the Digital Transformation Lab for Teaching and Learning funded by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education, including the curriculum, all materials, and instructions for individual learning activities for lecturers (e.g., ten self-study units, six interactive learning sessions, templates for performance records, assessment notes).
