Abstract

Background: Pregnancy is one of the most challenging phases, and it predisposes a woman to anxiety and stress in different forms. In a study, it was found that a significant majority of pregnant women (84%) experienced stress during pregnancy, while 6% of them had severe stress. This study was conducted in the United States. Objective: This study aims to study the effect of music therapy on anxiety and pain among pregnant women in the second trimester. It also studies the changes in maternal blood pressure (BP) and pulse rate after music therapy.Design: Cross-sectional study.Setting: Vani Vilas Hospital, BMCRI, Bengaluru.Methodology and materials: A questionnaire-based study of antenatal cases in the second trimester was given music therapy for 1 hour and pre-and post-sessions, the anxiety and pain levels were assessed through a visual analog scale, and also the maternal pulse rate and BP changes were noted. Results: There were 158 antenatal cases; the music therapy for 1 hour showed a significant decrease in the pulse rate from pretest to posttest, with a mean difference value of 1.115 and shows a paired t-test value significant (p < 0.0001).A subjective decrease in pain and anxiety levels from exposure of music therapy was documented with a mean difference value of 0.500 and 1.892, respectively, showing a significant p-value of < 0.0001 in both parameters, hence proving to alleviate the pain and anxiety levels in pregnant women studied. In maternal BP recordings, a significant change in diastolic BP (DBP) was noted (p = 0.032) but the systolic blood pressure (SBP) did not show any significant changes. Conclusion: To reduce anxiety and pain in antenatal mothers, music therapy is very effective. It also affects the vital parameters of antenatal mothers. The therapy will be benefitting pregnant women by improving their mental status and well-being of our antenatal mothers.
