Insights into Periodontal Awareness, Practices, Knowledge in Expecting Mothers: A Longitudinal Study
Abstract
Context: Pregnancy affects periodontal health, and vice versa.Periodontal disease not only has the potential to cause complications during pregnancy, but the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy can also worsen periodontal conditions.Aim: This study aims to assess pregnant individuals' awareness, practices, and knowledge regarding periodontal health using a self-designed questionnaire administered during their pregnancy.Materials and methods: A longitudinal study was conducted with 20 pregnant participants who visited the Gynaecology Department of SGT Medical College, Hospital & Research Institute, Gurugram, Haryana, India, throughout their pregnancy. The participants were surveyed about their oral health awareness, hygiene practices, and knowledge using a self-administered questionnaire in both Hindi and English.Their oral health status was assessed using the community periodontal index for treatment needs (CPITN). Statistical analysis:A post hoc comparison using the Mann-Whitney U test revealed a significant difference only between CPI scores 2 and 3.No other pairs showed statistically significant differences. Results: The survey revealed that the pregnant respondents lacked awareness about their oral hygiene. They did not adhere to proper oral hygiene practices, and their knowledge regarding oral hygiene was found to be significantly limited. Conclusion:The findings suggest a greater need for collaboration between gynecologists and dentists to address the overall health of pregnant women.
