Abstract

Normal vaginal childbirth is the leading cause of pelvic floor injuries, which can significantly impact a woman's health. This damage, most often to the levator ani muscle, can lead to pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD), a condition where the muscles are either too tight or too weak.Pelvic floor dysfunction can result in distressing, "life-altering" issues like pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence in up to 19% of mothers. While aging, obesity, and chronic constipation also contribute, key risk factors during birth include instrumental delivery, high birth weight, and prolonged labor.A perineal protection device (PPD) is a novel treatment and is very important because it is designed to reduce the risk of perineal and vaginal tears during childbirth. These devices work by providing support to the tissues between the vagina and the anus, helping them to stretch slowly and prevent uncontrolled tearing as the fetal head emerges.Research indicates that these devices can significantly lower the incidence of minor to moderate tears and may reduce the need for an episiotomy. They also help promote better maternal outcomes and a more comfortable postpartum recovery.
