Abstract

Fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) coatings are one of the most highly regarded coating systems used for the corrosion protection of carrier pipelines in the Middle East. FBE coatings have demonstrated outstanding performance recently, leading to extended pipeline lifespan and reduced maintenance costs. However, early coating failures in the internal surfaces of FBE-coated pipelines sometimes occur due to challenges such as limited accessibility for surface preparation, contamination, and inspection difficulties. Laser mapping and grinding technologies were investigated to assess their impact on coating application and performance through field and laboratory tests. These technologies will contribute to the improvement of protective coatings and the overall operational integrity of pipelines in the oil and gas industry.
