Abstract

The selection of efficient and environmentally friendly marine antifouling (AF) coatings is essential for biofouling concerns. The present work examined novel AF marine coatings of silicone and polyurethane formulations, based on an immobilized biocide technology. These coating systems were evaluated under different exposure conditions, and with respect to various mechanical and physical properties, for an all-around characterization. Commercial counterparts were used for benchmarking. Experimentation included sea immersion, hydrodynamic towing-tank tests, accelerated salt spray and ultraviolet (UV) exposure, and long-term immersion in laboratory conditions. The novel silicone formulation exhibited the best AF and corrosion performance, possibly due to its elastomeric nature. Hydrodynamically, both formulation types were similar.
