Data from: Local inhibitory dynamics underpin temporal integration and functional segregation between barrels and septa in the mouse barrel cortex
Abstract
This dataset contains electrophysiological, calcium imaging, anatomical tracing, and quantitative analysis data from a study examining functional differences between barrel and septal domains of the mouse whisker primary somatosensory cortex (wS1). The dataset includes multi-unit activity recordings obtained using in vivo silicon probe electrophysiology during repeated single-whisker and multi-whisker stimulation in wild-type and Elfn1 knockout mice, calcium imaging measurements from SST+ and VIP+ interneurons during sensory stimulation, interneuron density measurements derived from tissue clearing and light-sheet microscopy, retrograde tracing data describing projections from barrel and septal domains to secondary somatosensory (S2) and motor (M1) cortices, and associated statistical and decoding analyses. Data are organized by experimental modality and include raw recordings where appropriate, processed datasets, quantified measurements, metadata files, and analysis outputs used to generate the figures and supplementary figures reported in the associated manuscript. Variables include spiking activity, stimulus-response metrics, calcium traces, cell densities and depth, projection neuron densities and depth, temporal decoding performance, and barrel-versus-septa domain assignments. These data enable reanalysis of sensory response dynamics, cortical inhibitory circuit organization, temporal decoding approaches, and cortico-cortical projection patterns. The dataset may be reused for studies of sensory processing, cortical microcircuits, interneuron function, temporal coding, machine-learning-based neural decoding, and comparative analyses of barrel cortex organization. All data were collected from laboratory mice under protocols approved by the Cantonal Veterinary Office Zurich and the University of Zurich. No human participant data are included.
