Daysymetric Mapping Using National Structure Inventory
Abstract
This code uses a dasymetric mapping technique to distribute attribute values defined at the zip code level to new attribute values at the census county level. The attribute to be mapped is the number of people in each zip code who are using durable medical equipment such as a wheelchair. The National Structures inventory point data is used as the mechanism to distribute the zip code attributes across the zip code polygons. The inventory points have been screened for residential structures with hotels excluded. Multi-occupancy residential structures have been assigned a weight representing the expected number of residents within the structure. Once the zip code attribute values have been distributed to all the building points, the census county polygons are used to select points within the county boundary and add up the values. These sums then become the mapped attributes for each census county.
