Abstract

The authors of this volume set out to present the history of astronomy in Czechoslovakia during the "short twentieth century".In doing so, they aim to fill a longstanding gap in the country's historiography of astronomy, as co-editor Martin Šolc notes in the Preface. The gap they aim to fill is full of challenges, as the development of science in Czechoslovakia during the communist period was closely intertwined with the political situation in the country. The book is based primarily on oral interviews with nine Czechoslovak astronomers.
