Staying With the Past
Abstract
Cultybraggan Camp, once a WWII PoW camp in Scotland, is now a community-owned heritage site. Recent developments include converting some Nissen huts into luxury tourist accommodations. This chapter explores how local stakeholders have negotiated the site’s dissonant history and how visitors respond to its layered meanings. The reuse of a military site for leisure tourism raises questions about authenticity, ethical interpretation, and community benefit. The study illustrates the complexities of managing dark heritage within contemporary tourism.
