Seeking A Place in the World
Abstract
Chapter 4 traces the efforts of cultural producers in the 1920s and 1930s to restore ties with European countries and overcome Bulgaria’s international isolation. It identifies women writers as particularly effective emissaries of national progress and cultural diplomacy. The chapter highlights the post-1878 generation’s contributions to promoting Bulgarian literature internationally and fostering intellectual and artistic exchanges. Their efforts helped improve Bulgaria’s reputation abroad and re-established literary connections disrupted by the wars. The chapter analyzes the role of the International PEN in facilitating cultural engagement and the challenges faced by Bulgarian writers in gaining recognition on the global stage.
