Depth Counseling for Students Experiencing Cognitive Crisis in Learning
Abstract
The increasing complexity of contemporary learning demands has led many students to experience cognitive crisis in learning, characterized by cognitive confusion, distorted understanding, loss of learning meaning, and weakened academic decision-making. This condition often manifests through learning burnout, cognitive overload, low academic self-efficacy, and decreased learning engagement, which may hinder both academic achievement and personal development if left unaddressed. Conventional school counseling services tend to focus on surface-level academic and behavioral symptoms, limiting their effectiveness in addressing the deeper cognitive and experiential dimensions of students’ learning difficulties. This article aims to examine the role and effectiveness of depth counseling in supporting students experiencing cognitive crisis in learning. Using a conceptual and analytical approach grounded in contemporary counseling and educational theories, this study explores how depth counseling facilitates deep cognitive exploration, enhances metacognitive awareness, promotes self-regulated learning, and strengthens academic resilience. The findings indicate that depth counseling offers a holistic and student-centered intervention framework capable of addressing the underlying cognitive structures and subjective learning experiences of students. This study contributes theoretically to the development of in-depth cognitive counseling approaches and provides practical implications for school counselors in designing more meaningful and sustainable interventions for learning challenges in 21st-century education.
