Abstract

Scalar control (SC) is a straightforward method for controlling the speed of induction motors (IMs) in medium-performance industrial applications. The main disadvantage of SC is that the motor speed cannot follow the setting value accurately due to rotor slip during control. This research proposes an improved SC method based on slip compensation to mitigate the rotor slip problem and improve the entire speed control performance of the IM drive. A stator resistance (SR) adjustment model is proposed to integrate into the current-based model reference adaptive system using rotor flux from a voltage model, thereby improving the accuracy of virtual speed compensation for rotor slip under changing resistance parameters. The simulations are performed on MATLAB/Simulink software under various operations to evaluate the improved SC method. The results show that the improved method significantly reduces rotor slip and enhances speed control performance, particularly in cases where the SR changes. These simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed control method, providing a feasible solution to enhance the performance and reliability of IM operation in various industrial applications.
