Telementoring in gastric cancer surgery: a review with an illustrative case
Abstract
Globally, surgical education in operating rooms largely determines the standards and safety of surgical treatment.Telemedicine refers to the use of information and communication technology in the medical field to provide distant patient care. One of the most promising applications of telemedicine in surgical education is surgical telementoring, which enables remote training of less-experienced surgeons by experienced professionals using realtime video streaming. In surgical telementoring, various levels of interaction can support intraoperative guidance and skill acquisition. This article examines the advantages and limitations of telementoring in surgical education, as well as strategies for overcoming obstacles and enhancing surgical training. An illustrative case of distal gastrectomy performed remotely in a patient with gastric cancer using the Medical Technology and Education Group's "SurgBox _Live" device is presented to demonstrate the practical application of telementoring and telestration. Here, we outline the potential benefits, challenges, and future directions of these approaches in surgical education and minimally invasive gastric cancer surgery.
