PEDAGOGICAL CHALLENGES IN TRAINING LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS TO USE FIREARMS
Abstract
The article analyzes pedagogical problems of training Ukrainian military personnel and law enforcement officers in the lawful use of firearms in the performance of their duties. The relevance of the research topic is determined by the realities of full-scale war in Ukraine, when employees of the security and defense sector of Ukraine must perform their duties under significant psychological and emotional pressure. The authors emphasize the advisability of studying and implementing the rifle training practices used by the US Armed Forces and American law enforcement agencies.A summary of recent foreign studies (D.Grosman, B. Blacker, D. Biggs, M. Hamilton, R. Pettijohn, and others) confirms the effectiveness of using practiceoriented teaching technologies to improve response speed and decision-making quality in stressful conditions.American experience shows that realistic marksmanship training helps soldiers develop automatic responses based on the stimulus-response principle, enabling them to act appropriately and promptly in combat situations. The key role of simulation realism as a factor in transferring acquired skills to real-life situations is emphasized.Considering Ukrainian realities, there is a need to integrate modern approaches to marksmanship training into the professional education system for law enforcement officers. In the context of repeated cases of unlawful use of weapons resulting in civilian deaths and legal disputes over the legality of law enforcement actions, this study demonstrates the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the firearms training system in Ukraine. This can be achieved by combining legal awareness of the risks of legal liability for exceeding permissible measures of coercion, critical thinking, and adequate actions in extreme conditions.
