Abstract

Dentures and dental implants are the major prosthetic devices given to restore physiological and esthetic functions of oral tissues of edentulous or partially edentulous patients.Complete and partial dentures based on polymeric compositions are the most popular devices since the cost of dental implants and metal-base dentures are much higher.Dentures serve as replacements for missing teeth and help restore functionality and appearance to your smile. These prosthetic devices come in various types and are constructed from different materials, each with specific properties and benefits. The composition of dentures has evolved significantly over time, with modern materials offering improved comfort, durability, and aesthetics.Understanding what are dentures made of can help you make informed decisions about your dental prosthetics.Acrylic resins, which represented an important step forward in dentistry, have been used in manufacturing denture bases, artificial teeth, orthodontic appliances, maxillofacial prostheses, single-tooth or provisional restorations, as well as veneering materials, since the middle of the twentieth century. The most common allergens in prosthetic materials are acrylates and metals.Allergy to acrylates and methacrylates is a rare cause of stomatitis, because dentures contain acrylate in polymerized, nonsensitizing form.Adverse reactions to denture resins are more common in those with existing allergies, and treatment involves switching to hypoallergenic materials.Modern dentures are made from high-quality materials like acrylic, cobalt chrome, and flexible nylon. These materials are chosen based on comfort, strength, and aesthetics.Ideally, a denture base material should be biocompatible with the oral tissues and also should be able to with stand the masticatory forces. This article reviews denture base materials with respect to their composition, chemistry, properties along with their pros and cons.
