CURRENT INDICATIONS AND METHODS OF PERIODONTAL SPLINTING
Abstract
The treatment of periodontal disease is one of the mainstays of modern dentistry.Periodontitis, an inflammatory condition initiated by a number of particular microorganisms, damages the periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone, resulting in tooth mobility or even tooth loss.As periodontal disease progresses, it leads to progressive loss of attachment apparatus subsequently leading to tooth mobility. These pathological changes include acute periodontal inflammation and associated laxity of periodontal supportive tissues, the apical shift of the center of rotation of the tooth due to advanced attachment and alveolar bone loss as well as traumatic occlusion. The resultant tooth mobility adversely impacts the phonetics, function, comfort and speech of an individual, masticatory discomfort, mainly in protrusive movements in the region of the mandibular anterior teeth.Combined periodontal and prosthodontic treatment demands of patients require a structured coordination of pretreatments and an adequate choice of restorations. To manage and save periodontal mobile teeth, periodontal splint is a proposed adjunctive treatment option.Splinting periodontally involved teeth is a technique that has been in use for centuries. This article gives a brief history and review of the literature concerning periodontal splinting and outlines the rationale and indications for the correct application of periodontal splinting in modern dental practice. The common types of splint and clinical techniques involved are described, addressing some of the clinical problems. Also, this article discusses the clinical rationale indicatio, indications, contraindications, basic principles of tooth splinting for and the effects of splinting mobile teeth.Splinting can provide long-term support to mobile teeth and aid in maintaining periodontally compromised teeth.Splinting of teeth is a treatment option in addition to active periodontal therapy when Журнал «Перспективи та інновації науки» № 12(58) 2025 2000 patients are disturbed by tooth mobility. The dental splinting process is permanent and helps protect the bone from further loss.Splinting of teeth with periodontitis is one of the most effective methods of preserving them.Splinting is a suitable option for improving the masticatory function, esthetics, and comfort of mobile teeth. Thus, the splinting is a viable alternative to keep them in function satisfactorily. It is crucial to raise clinician's awareness in the appropriate way of managing tooth mobility.
