THE ROLE OF BODY AWARENESS AND SENSE OF COHERENCE IN THE FORMATION OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING
Abstract
The article provides a review-based theoretical justification of the role of body awareness and sense of coherence as interrelated resources in the development of an individual's psychological well-being.It is shown that the contemporary understanding of well-being goes beyond its reduction to the absence of psychological tension and stress resistance and is increasingly associated with inner integrity, selfacceptance, the capacity for personal growth, and the presence of life meaning, as described in C. Ryff's model of psychological well-being.It is revealed that the phenomenology of the bodily self, body image, bodily identity, bodily subjectivity, and the phenomenology of corporeality as a whole determine the way in which one lives through one's own body as a space of subjective presence, boundaries, and support, whereas disturbances in these dimensions are reflected in psychosomatic symptoms, in particular in situations of facial reconstruction and the experience of a "foreign face" and a "foreign body."Sense of coherence is considered as a generalized life orientation that encompasses the comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness of events and determines whether the life-world is perceived as ordered, predictable, and worthy of emotional and volitional efforts, being associated with indicators of hardiness, stress resistance, and mental health. It is substantiated that the combination of body awareness and sense of coherence may serve as a common basis for the formation of the key dimensions of psychological well-being according to C. Ryff: self-acceptance, autonomy, positive relations with others, environmental mastery, personal growth, and the presence of life goals. The possibilities of integrating the proposed conceptual model into salutogenic and psychosomatic discourse are outlined, as well as the prospects for its psychodiagnostic and psychotherapeutic application in working with body image disturbances, crises of bodily identity, and in maintaining psychological well-being under conditions of prolonged stress.
