GENDER PECULIARITIES OF RENDERING FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE IN TRANSLATION (BASED ON GEORGE ORWELL'S DYSTOPIAN NOVEL «1984»)
Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of gender specificity in the rendering of figurative language in the Ukrainian translations of George Orwell's cult dystopian novel «1984».A comparative analysis of three translated versions performed by Vitalii Danmer, Viktor Shovkun, and Bohdana Nosenok is carried out.The relevance of the study is determined by the need for a deep understanding of the translator's personality influence on the text within the modern anthropocentric paradigm of translation studies. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the argumentation that the gender aspect is a significant variable that determines the choice of translation transformations when dealing with complex dystopian imagery. The article provides a detailed analysis of the reproduction of key metaphors, similes, personification, and symbolism (in particular, the concepts of «Big Brother», «memory hole», and «Room 101»).Special attention is paid to the hypothesis regarding the influence of the translator's gender on the choice of lexico-stylistic means.Through a comparative analysis, it was established that male translators (V.Danmer, V. Shovkun) tend toward a more straightforward, rational, and sometimes abstract presentation, which emphasizes the ideological severity of the dystopia («watches/guards», «memory hole»).In contrast, B. Nosenok's translation reveals a tendency toward greater emotional richness, visualization of details, and the use of expressive epithets, which adds psychological depth and dynamism to the narrative. This is also manifested in the choice of more dynamic verbs (burst in instead of flew in) and the striving to create brighter visual associations in personifications. The role of metonymy and synecdoche as tools for creating an atmosphere of totalitarian control is revealed. It is authenticated that despite professional ethics and the pursuit of equivalence, the translator's individual experience and gender identity inevitably affect the connotative coloring of the image. It is concluded that the gender aspect is a significant variable in the process of literary translation, which determines the nuances of interpreting the complex sociopolitical and philosophical meanings of the work.
