Abstract
The study focuses on homage, allusion, and appropriation as key mechanisms of conceptual meaning-making within contemporary visual discourse. It is argued that these strategies should not be interpreted as forms of secondary quotation or stylistic borrowing, but rather as tools of intellectual communication through which designers construct complex semantic relationships between the artistic source, the author's position, and the field of possible interpretations. The article proposes a system of analytical criteria for examining conceptual strategies of visual intertextuality, including the criteria of conceptual articulation of the author's position, degree of semantic transformation, level of interpretative openness, contextual embeddedness of the visual image, and ethical-cultural correctness of recontextualization. The application of this system enables a comparative analysis of homage, allusion, and appropriation not on the basis of formal similarity to the source, but according to the nature of conceptual reinterpretation, the organization of the image's semantic potential, and the intensity of audience involvement in the meaning-making process.Based on selected graphic design projects, the heuristic potential of the proposed analytical matrix is demonstrated. This matrix allows for the differentiation of distinct models of conceptual engagement with cultural heritage-from the stabilization of meaning in homage, through semantic shift in allusion, to radical reprogramming of the borrowed image in appropriation. The study concludes that strategies of visual intertextuality may be understood as indicators of the level of a designer's conceptual thinking. The findings contribute to further theoretical reflection on intertextual practices in graphic design and provide a methodological foundation for fostering professional reflection and project responsibility in the context of design education.
