A DISCOURSE-BASED APPROACH TO TEACHING MODERN ENGLISH GRAMMAR
Abstract
The definition of a discourse-oriented approach to teaching modern English grammar is a multifaceted issue that necessitates the examination of a number of related aspects. The article examines the discursive aspects of grammar as a discourse-oriented system.Grammatical structures function as tools that are frequently used by speakers and writers to express attitudes, evaluate events, coordinate interpersonal relationships, and shape audience perception, taking into account the semantic load of meaning. The article demonstrates that the grammatical arsenal is inextricably linked to the communicative intention and purpose of discourse. For students studying applied linguistics and other areas of in-depth foreign language study, the approach under consideration is particularly relevant. The article argues that the discourse-based approach provides a methodological basis for students to further develop the conceptual framework that connects grammatical theory with real communicative practice. An effective methodological component of modern curricula is the teaching of modal verbs through the integration of political discourse. The study draws attention to the use of modal verbs, which occupy a prominent place in political discourse due to their special role in expressing obligation, possibility, prediction, intention, and power relations. In addition, the article demonstrates that, unlike the widespread practice of memorizing lists of modal verb uses, this approach requires students to analyze how and under what conditions modal verbs function within a broader communicative framework. For future translation specialists, the primary focus lies in ensuring accuracy, equivalence, and pragmatic adequacy in meaning reproduction. The article suggests that such students should be encouraged to generalize findings, formulate hypotheses, and relate grammatical choices to broader discursive strategies, thereby strengthening their analytical and research competence.
