PATRIOTIC CONSCIOUSNESS THROUGH ARTS: CHINESE YOUTH SOCIAL EDUCATION AND VALUE NARRATIVES
Abstract
The article examines the formation of patriotic consciousness among Chinese youth through arts-based value narratives within the compulsory education system of the People's Republic of China.Focusing on modern Chinese literature, music, and traditional cultural forms, the study explores how cultural content functions as an implicit mechanism of social education and value transmission.Particular attention is given to the literary works of Alai, whose narratives are widely regarded as culturally authentic yet ideologically integrative, making them suitable for educational use.The article argues that contemporary Chinese patriotic education relies not only on formal ideological instruction but also on a carefully constructed cultural environment that includes recommended literary texts, musical space, and elements of traditional culture embedded in the learning process.Through literature, music, and art education, social values such as patriotism, collective responsibility, respect for tradition, and national unity are presented as natural components of cultural identity rather than externally imposed norms. The compulsory education system thus employs arts as a soft pedagogical instrument that supports value internalization and emotional engagement among students.By analyzing the intersection of modern Chinese literature, musical space, and cultural traditions in educational practice, the article demonstrates how arts-based narratives contribute to the normalization of patriotic values in contemporary China. The findings highlight the role of culture as a mediating space between state educational goals and individual value formation, offering insights into the broader mechanisms of social education in the PRC.
