Abstract

E Blok, Daire 5 (Block E, No. 5) is a short experimental documentary that navigates the psychological and spatial experience of displacement through an intimate portrait of a family fractured by distance, dislocation, and ongoing reconstruction. Filmed between Linz, Austria and Istanbul, Turkey the work follows a young woman, Çağla, as she adapts to an impersonal dormitory life while her family contends with the limbo of temporary housing and the haunting incompletion of their demolished home, one torn down under earthquake regulations yet never rebuilt. Blending first-person voice, observational framing, and site-specific performance, the film reflects on transitory spaces and blurred temporalities, where personal routines and familial conversations become acts of resilience and remembrance. Anchored in the concept of “flux” as both material instability and emotional undercurrent, the film interweaves body movement, sound design, and architectural imagery to render a visual and sonic meditation on belonging, waiting, and memory. The work engages with the broader sociopolitical conditions of precarity and home-making in contemporary Turkey. Through its experimental form, E Blok, Daire 5 resists narrative closure, instead embracing flux as a condition of being ever-shifting, uncertain, and quietly enduring.
