A Line Made by Walking
Abstract
A Line Made by Walking (2025) reimagines Richard Long’s iconic gesture through the lens of geological time, drawing on Thomas Nail’s Theory of the Earth and Henri Bergson’s concept of la durée. This sculptural installation—a growing collection of rocks wrapped in recycled paper pulp—enacts a material dialogue between paper’s immediacy and stone’s deep temporality. By embedding rocks into rapidly drying pulp, the work collapses temporal scales, challenging what I call Normative Chronoception: the human-centered illusion of fixed time. Installed both indoors and out, the work foregrounds flux as a perceptual shift—inviting viewers to encounter matter as always becoming.
