Sound Without Subject: Erik Satie’s Furniture Music and the Aesthetics of Flux
Abstract
First presented in 1917, Erik Satie’s musique d’ameublement challenged the dominantnotion of music as an expressive or narrative art. Conceived not for focused listeningbut as a sonic extension of the room itself, this “furniture music” sought to mergeseamlessly with the everyday, reducing the listener’s role from interpreter to inhabitant(Vanel, 2017; Makomaska, 2019). Built from looping, fragmentary motifs lackingdirectional development, these pieces quietly unsettled the frame of musical experience, foreshadowing the ambient and environmental aesthetics explored later in the twentiethcentury (Lysaker, 2018; Orledge, 1984). This paper explores musique d’ameublement as an early gesture of sonic flux—a form of musical becoming that subverts the artwork’sautonomy in favor of relational presence. Satie’s rejection of virtuosic display and hisinsistence on music as a component of lived space resonate with George Maciunas’ Fluxus ethos of process over product (Hayes, 2017). His work anticipates a musicalityno longer bound by vertical hierarchies or linear time, but dispersed acrossenvironments, subjectivities, and uses—a sonic ecology in which presence displaces performance, and coexistence supplants command.Drawing from affect theory, posthumanism, and sonic ecology, this paper positions Satie as a proto-Fluxus figure who anticipated ideas of indeterminacy, diffuse authorship, and the decentralization ofthe listener (Ančić, 2016; Bishop, 2013). Furthermore, Satie’s practice unsettles binarylogics of music versus non-music, background versus foreground, proposing a liquidmusical ontology that traverses both physical and symbolic space. His legacy continues to echo in contemporary sound art, site-responsive practices, and ambient aesthetics, affirming a musical vision grounded in flow, context, and sonic coexistence (Berger, 1945; Makomaska, 2018; Alaminos-Fernández, 2018).
