The Current status of the Don breed of horses
Abstract
The Don horse breed has a rich history. Once the most numerous horse breed in Russia, it is currently under threat of extinction and needs to be preserved. A promising area of its use is mass equestrian sports, therefore, breeding work with the breed should be focused on preserving and improving those economically useful qualities that are in demand by athletes. The article provides an analysis of the linear structure, economically useful features of Donskoy horses, and inbred breeding stock. It has been established that despite the limited population, horses of the Don breed have an extensive linear structure, numbering 8 lines. The leading lines are Buyan, Chelna and Bordо. The breeding stock is aligned in measurements and body indexes, has a typical red color with a characteristic golden sheen of wool, and is highly appreciated for its exterior. Most horses are moderately inbred, with an average inbreeding ratio of 1.49% for the breed, indicating that there is no closure in the breed.
