Schneer Kogan as the first director of the Kishinev Art School
Abstract
The article is dedicated to the Moldavian artist and teacher Schneer Hertzovich Kogan (1872-1940), who was the first director of the Kishinev Art School, founded by his senior colleague Vladimir Fulgentievich Okushko (1862-1919) on the basis of the City Drawing School. His contribution to both art education and the fine arts of our region is no less significant than that was done by his colleagues Joseph Stepankosky, Nikolai Golynsky, Terenty Zubkov, Vasily Blinov, Vladimir Okushko, Vasily Tarasov, Auguste Baillayre, Alexandru Plamadeala and others. Born in Orheyev, then he managed to visit many major cultural centers, where he became acquainted with the most advanced achievements of the time in the field of art. After studying in Odessa and Munich, he worked for long period in Königsberg, Tel-Aviv and Istanbul. In the interwar years, Sh. Kogan, unlike many of his colleagues very successfully combined creative work with pedagogical activities, leaving behind a whole constellation of talented disciples.
