Abstract

In this study, we analyzed the structural proteins and free sugars of the fruiting body extract of the mushroom, Phellinus ribis, and investigated the physiological activities of some skin care cosmetics. The structural proteins of the fruiting body extract of the P. ribis mushroom were composed of 17 amino acids, and the free sugars were identified as fructose, glucose, and sucrose. In an investigation of antioxidant activity, SOD-like activity and FRAP were found to increase in proportion to the treatment concentration in both the hot water and methanol extracts. Tyrosinase inhibitory activity was found to increase in proportion to the treatment concentration in both the hot water and methanol extracts. In an investigation of the antibacterial activity of the extracts, the hot water extract exhibited antibacterial effects against S. aureus KCCM 11593 and S. epidermis, while the methanol extract exhibited antibacterial effects only against S. aureus KCCM 11593. Neither the hot water nor the methanol extracts exhibited antibacterial effects against S. typhimurium ATCC 11862. Therefore, based on these results, it is thought that the hot water and methanol extracts of the fruiting bodies of the P. ribis mushroom can be used not only as natural antioxidants and whitening agents, but also as natural preservatives, and as cosmeceutical ingredients for skin beauty and healing, as well as raw materials for functional foods for skin beauty.
