Abstract

A study, conducted among Tubalars during an ethnographic expedition in July 2025, aimed to identify the nature of ethnic processes in the Turochak, Choi, and Maima districts of the Altai Republic, where the main ethnic territory of Tubalars is located. Slightly less than half of the representatives of this ethnic subgroup of the Altai people live here. We estimated their number at 1,500, while the rest left the territory as a result of migration. In the course of the study, a mass survey of 25 % of Tubalars in the main ethnic territory was conducted using a special questionnaire. For adults, the questionnaire was compiled during a direct conversation; and questionnaires for children were compiled from the parents' words. A total of 381 questionnaires have been compiled. It turned out that assimilation processes in language and in various areas of material and spiritual culture have developed among Tubalars. Tubalars are gradually forgetting their language, switching to Russian, and most children do not speak it. The Altai people's influence is growing in the western part of the territory. The number and proportion of nationally mixed marriages is growing, most often with Russians, to a lesser extent with Chelkans, Kumandins, and southern Altaians. The proportion of people of mixed origin among Tubalars has reached a high level, and they are the majority among children and youth. Nevertheless, ethnic identity is quite stable.
