Abstract

Introduction-The foramen magnum (FM) is largest aperture of skull and has anatomical importance as it provides communication between the cranial cavity and the vertebral canal and its dimensions are quite important for neurosurgical intervention, imaging applications, forensic identification, and anthropology Material and methods- Total of 60 samples, of which 30 were dry adult human skulls (15 male, 15 female) and 30 were cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images (15 male, 15 female). The morphometric parameters analyzed involved anteroposterior diameter (APD), transverse diameter (TD), and foramen magnum index (FMI) of the skull and CBCT images. The results were expressed in mean ± standard deviation (SD). Result - The A-P diameter for foramen magnum in male skull was 33.54±2.15, transverse diameter was 29.14±1.86 and foramen index was 87.11± 5.00 whereas in A-P diameter for foramen magnum in Female was 33.5±2.48 ,transverse diameter was 27.12±2.00 and foramen magnum index was 81.15 ± 8.0 In CBCT the A-P diameter for the foramen magnum in CBCT of female skulls to be 33.5±2.48 mm, transverse diameter to be 28.94±3.22 mm, and foramen index to be 85.36±11.07, whereas in females, the A-P diameter was 29.93±2.16, transverse diameter was 29.93±2.16, and the foramen magnum index was 96.65± 7.38. Conclusion- Present study help the anatomists, radiologists, and neurosurgeons for posterior cranial fossa surgical approaches, radiological, and evolutionary studies DOI: https://doi.org/10.52783/jchr.v16.i1.12163
