Abstract

Abstract The Hoffman–Joyce Continuum (HJC) is a formal framework for analyzing and designing perceptual modulation in written language. Developed by Steven Srebranig (2025–2026) and published as a versioned specification, HJC treats text not merely as semantic content but as a structured interface whose organization influences a reader’s evolving interpretive state. The framework identifies three primary dimensions of modulation: Fit — structural coherence, reference stability, and constraint integrity Phase — temporal pacing, attentional redirection, rhythm, and sequencing Dissolution — controlled ambiguity, perceptual drift, symbolic compression, and managed instability Together, these dimensions define a navigable modulation space through which texts may move while remaining interpretable. HJC provides a vocabulary, set of techniques, and analytic procedures for describing how language can systematically alter reader orientation without reducing interpretation to semantic content alone. The framework operates strictly within symbolically mediated interpretation. It makes no ontological claims concerning consciousness, cognition, or metaphysics. HJC is operational rather than explanatory: it characterizes observable structural behaviors in language and derives testable predictions concerning reader interaction, modulation, and interpretive stability. In its most constrained form, HJC functions as a comparative diagnostic system. It identifies structural divergence, coherence patterns, pacing behaviors, and dissolution signatures without adjudicating truth, ideology, authority, or meaning. Its purpose is structural analysis, modulation design, comparative evaluation, and experimental investigation. The specification defines: Core terminology and formal constructs Modulation techniques and compositional methods Boundary conditions and failure modes Analytic and diagnostic procedures Empirical predictions and validation pathways Cross-linguistic and cross-domain applications The framework is intended for authors, researchers, educators, critics, performers, and developers of generative systems interested in the relationship between textual structure and perceptual experience. Repository Structure and Scope This repository serves as the canonical release location for the Hoffman–Joyce Continuum specification. The repository is anchored by the versioned HJC Specification and the accompanying HJC Core document, which together provide the authoritative statement of the framework. Supporting materials, examples, demonstrations, and implementation guidance are subordinate to these core documents and do not supersede the specification itself. All framework definitions, boundary conditions, and formal claims reside in the versioned specification. Subsequent revisions remain subject to explicit version control, public documentation, and ongoing empirical evaluation. HJC is offered as an open analytical framework. Its validity depends not upon authority or interpretation but upon continued coherence, reproducibility, falsifiability, and successful application across readers, languages, domains, and independent evaluators.
