Abstract

Hypertrophy and protrusion are defined as an increase in the size of the labia minora (Lm) of the vulva, extending beyond the labia majora. This condition represents an anatomical variant that may cause physical discomfort, sexual dissatisfaction, and even psychological repercussions. In this context, the present study analyzed the self-perception of labia minora hypertrophy and protrusion in a group of 20 women who attended a private gynecological consultation. Two techniques were employed: observation and interview, along with a structured data sheet applied during the consultation after obtaining informed consent. Labia minora measurements were taken using a Vernier caliper. Among the women studied, the mean age was 33,9 ± 9,9 years, and the number of sexual partners ranged from 2,25 ± 1,37. Self-perception of external genitalia was unfavorable in 55% of participants, with 60% expressing dissatisfaction with the size of their labia minora. In cases of hypertrophy, 75% showed involvement of the clitoral hood (C), with a variation of 2,60 cm ± 0,76. A grade II protrusion of the labia minora predominated (66,7%), and self-perception was favorable in these cases. A total of 91,7% of participants stated that surgery was highly necessary to improve aesthetics. Significant differences were found between self-perception of labia minora size and the perceived need for surgery (p < 0,05). In conclusion, the self-perception of the size and appearance of the labia minora is subjective. Although genital self-image was generally favorable, participants reported dissatisfaction with the size of their labia minora and expressed a need to undergo surgery for aesthetic or functional reasons.
