Utilidad de la DHEA en la satisfacción sexual en mujeres menopáusicas y postmenopáusicas con resequedad vaginal.
Abstract
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) supplementation during menopause has been suggested to improve sexual satisfaction and vaginal dryness, although these benefits remain controversial. A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted to evaluate the effects of DHEA on sexual satisfaction in 70 women with menopausal and postmenopausal vaginal dryness who met the inclusion criteria. Participants were recruited from three Ginecospa locations in Venezuela: Caracas, Barquisimeto, and San Cristóbal. Following informed consent, participants completed an online survey assessing sexual satisfaction and vaginal dryness, adapted from the Female Sexual Function Index. The mean age of participants was 53.7 ± 6.1 years; 62.9% were recruited at the Barquisimeto site, and 83.3% had no history of hormone therapy use. Post-DHEA administration, over 70% of participants reported being very satisfied with their sexual activity (desire, arousal, lubrication), while over 50% reported no vaginal dryness in the previous week, nor did dryness interfere with their sexual life. Eighty percent of participants reported no side effects. While preliminary, these findings suggest that oral DHEA (50 mg/day for three months) may improve sexual function-related issues, including vaginal dryness, sexual desire, frequency, and lubrication, in the studied population.
