Abstract

This ENSO Foundation Note presents a first-principles derivation of the exponential evolution operator as the unique generator of continuous recursive evolution over a derived temporal parameter. The paper begins from a prior ENSO result: time must not be assumed as an external coordinate, but derived from non-temporal structure. Once a physically meaningful temporal parameter exists, the question becomes: what update law is forced by recursive evolution itself? Starting only from locality, time-translation invariance, composability of updates, and continuity, the paper derives the multiplicative Cauchy functional equation, F(Δt + Δs) = F(Δt)F(Δs), and shows that its unique continuous solution has the exponential form F(Δt) = e^{kΔt}. The note also clarifies the relation between the additive and multiplicative Cauchy equations: the additive form describes the linear generator, while exponentiation yields the multiplicative evolution operator. In this sense, the exponential map is not introduced as an ansatz, convenience, or modelling habit, but as the mathematically inevitable structure of continuous, composable recursive dynamics in time. This result does not claim that all recursion is exponential. Discrete, discontinuous, explicitly time-dependent, stochastic, or non-composable systems may require different treatment. The claim is sharper: any continuous, local, composable, time-homogeneous recursion over a derived temporal parameter must possess exponential generator structure. Combined with the ENSO time sequence and the 2025 recursion foundations, this note completes a compact foundational bridge from derived time to lawful recursive evolution.
