The Law of W in Time: A Relational Dynamical Model of Human Return Under Burden
Abstract
This theoretical report formulates the Law of Witness (W) as a minimal dynamical law for human development under burden. It assumes a simple three-state geometry – 0 (open but not yet integrated), –1 (break, collapse, fragmentation) and +1 (integration after break) – and makes one strong claim: for a given burden BBB, the long-term outcome R(B,W)R(B,W)R(B,W) on the –1/0/+1 axis is a strictly increasing function of W, the quality of embodied witness at the moment of break. In other words, the same event can consolidate into chronic –1 or become a “second birth” depending on whether sufficient W is present in time. The paper operationalises W as a composite variable (somatic presence, temporal continuity, non-reducing language and physiological synchrony) and introduces the idea of an effective W around the break point, with a critical threshold WcritW_{crit}Wcrit. It then derives system-level predictions: rotation models and heavily protocolised services systematically depress effective W and therefore increase the density of chronic –1, while organisations that protect “anchor witnesses” (stable +1/W-carriers) can bend trajectories towards return. The Law of W is proposed as a missing relational parameter in trauma theory, youth care and mental health systems, and as a testable basis for future empirical work.
